Ha! Great magicians never reveal their secrets. But perhaps I will make an exception for you just this once. Other than enthusiasm and dedication, I use a variety of materials. My background is in traditional media such as pencil and watercolor, which I continue to use. The last few years, I've also been incorporating digital elements into my work. For instance, the Rapunzel illustrations were created as fully shaded pencil drawings, scanned and combined with digital coloring. I’m always looking to experiment with new techniques.

Although I focus on drawing and illustration, I'm an all-around-artist. I embrace graphic design, printmaking, sculpture, model/set design, and photography. My continual picture-taking rivals my passion for picture-making, and most gallery submissions have been photographs. The next step is to more deeply explore mixing these two arenas of art into one unique approach.

A Glimpse Behind the Curtain

So you want to know more? Let's just say I enjoy long walks on the beach and plotting world domination. Did I really say that? I meant peace. Yeah, world peace.

A native and current resident of New York City, I don’t own a car but can walk almost as fast as one. I spent my college years in Baltimore at MICA - Maryland Institute College of Art - graduating with a major in Illustration and minor in Art History.

Since then I've created several pieces of sample artwork for aspiring writers. I've recently begun the launch of my own children's portrait business, Smiley Fries Studio. I continue to develop many original stories, writing and illustrating concepts for picture books, young adult novels, comics and graphic novels.

To find out more about my art, or hire me for a project, you can contact me by emailing ellen.sted at gmail.com
